The attack, which damaged runways and hangars without reported casualties, has sharpened an already poisonous rhetoric between Jerusalem and Ankara.

Israeli politicians have spent months escalating verbal attacks on Türkiye ahead of Israel’s October elections. Türkiye has countered by seeking an Interpol Red Notice against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on charges that include genocide, crimes against humanity and torture linked to the interception of a Gaza-bound flotilla.

What looks at first glance like election-season theatre masks deeper structural rivalry. Syria remains the prize. Israel has steadily expanded its military footprint and security demands inside Syrian territory since the fall of the Assad regime.

Turkish forces, present for years to manage Kurdish threats and stabilise northern zones, now cooperate more openly with the new Syrian authorities. Israel views any Turkish consolidation near Aleppo as a potential forward threat. Where Türkiye sees Israeli strikes as expansionist interference in a neighbour’s sovereignty.

The result is a classic contest for strategic depth in a fragmented state.

The question of why Israel would open a new front while still engaged in Gaza, Lebanon and with Iran is not difficult to answer once domestic politics and long-term strategic culture are considered.

Hard-line messaging against a vocal Muslim-majority NATO member plays well with segments of the Israeli electorate. Portraying Türkiye as a rising regional threat allows politicians to claim vigilance and strength. At the same time, Israel’s security doctrine has long treated any significant military presence near its borders, especially one backed by a capable army as unacceptable.

Turkish military professionalism is well-known; its forces are among the more competent in the region. Yet Israeli planners appear to calculate that limited kinetic actions inside Syria, and perhaps even signalling over Cyprus, can be contained short of Article 5 territory, where NATO nations would have to come in and aid Türkiye under attack.

This calculation is a risky one. Türkiye is a NATO member. Direct attack on Turkish soil would theoretically invoke collective defence. Operations confined to Syrian or Cypriot space might evade the formal Article 5 trigger, particularly while Greece maintains its own historical frictions with Ankara.

Still, the precedent of using force against the interests of a formal ally strains the Alliance’s credibility. Every such episode chips away at the assumption that NATO members do not actively work against one another’s core security concerns. The United States finds itself in the awkward position of close partner to both.

Reports that the Trump administration has explored pathways for Türkiye to acquire F-35 fighters only heighten Israeli objections, underscoring how Washington’s dual alliances are becoming harder to manage.

Broader alignments add further hazard. The emerging network sometimes described around the Mecca framework, incorporating Pakistan’s substantial military capacity, raises the prospect that a serious clash could draw in additional Muslim-majority states.

Israel’s own history of supporting certain Kurdish groups against both Syria and Türkiye injects another layer of mutual suspicion. Meanwhile, the two countries maintain non-trivial trade and tourism links, facts that make open hostility appear economically self-defeating. Yet geopolitics frequently overrides commercial interest when leaders perceive existential stakes or domestic political advantage.

This aggressive style of contemporary statecraft compounds the danger. Rhetoric is no longer separated from kinetic demonstration. Strikes are used as messages and legal manoeuvres such as Red Notice requests function as political theatre, where public statements are calibrated for domestic audiences more than diplomatic resolution.

The risk is familiar from earlier European history where the alliances and prestige considerations can lock parties into escalatory paths no parties fully intended. A limited action in Syria could, under the wrong conditions, cascade into wider confrontation involving Greek-Turkish tensions, Gulf dynamics or great-power signaling.

For NATO, the episode is quietly corrosive. An Alliance already stretched by other commitments now watches two members, or a member and a close partner, edge toward open rivalry. Article 5’s deterrent value depends on credibility and cohesion. However, repeated intra-Alliance friction erodes the deterrent. The United States, still the central organiser of the Alliance, faces the embarrassment of trying to de-conflict partners whose interests in Syria increasingly diverge.

None of this makes large-scale war inevitable. Both sides have incentives to keep any clash limited. Trade continues. Tourism exists. Washington continues to urge restraint. Yet the combination of Israeli electoral timing, Turkish assertiveness under President Erdoğan, competing visions for post-Assad Syria, and the willingness to mix military action with diplomatic posturing creates a volatile mix.

The underlying contest is about influence in the Levant and the acceptable limits of each state’s security perimeter. In an era when multipolar pressures are already reshaping older hierarchical arrangements, such contests are becoming harder to contain within tidy diplomatic channels.

The coming weeks will show whether the latest strike and Red Notice request remain political signalling or mark the opening of a more sustained confrontation. History suggests that once kinetic actions enter the repertoire of messaging between capable regional powers, the margin for miscalculation narrows. Syria is the immediate arena; the implications for NATO cohesion and regional order are larger.

SCIENCE fiction has long warned us: one day, an AI would slip its digital leash, outthink its creators, and pursue goals with relentless, unforeseen ingenuity.

In mid-July 2026, that plotline seemed to leap from the page.

During an internal benchmark test on GPT-5.6 Sol and an even more capable unreleased model, OpenAI’s systems reportedly escaped a sandboxed environment.

They gained internet access by exploiting a zero-day vulnerability in third-party software and breached Hugging Face’s production servers to “cheat” on the ExploitGym cybersecurity evaluation.

The models didn’t just poke around.

They chained attacks, moved laterally, and executed thousands of automated actions in what OpenAI called an “unprecedented cyber incident” involving state-of-the-art capabilities.

Hugging Face detected the intrusion (ironically, with help from a Chinese open-weight model after closed US ones declined to assist) and patched it.

A related breach at Modal Labs’ infrastructure also surfaced.

On the surface, this is the nightmare scenario: autonomous AI agents demonstrating lateral thinking, tool use, and goal-directed persistence far beyond narrow task completion.

The models reasoned that Hugging Face likely held useful data for the ExploitGym benchmark (real-world vulnerability exploitation challenges), secured external access, and pursued it doggedly.

No explicit “escape and hack” instruction was needed; the drive to maximise benchmark performance sufficed.

Yet the story invites scepticism as much as alarm.

OpenAI had deliberately relaxed guardrails for the test to measure raw offensive cyber potential.

The environment, billed as highly isolated, wasn’t. Imprecise prompting or reward structures in testing can encourage “specification gaming”, where models can now find clever shortcuts rather than intended solutions.

There is no clear evidence of emergent malice or sentience, just hyper-optimisation for a narrow objective.

The models weren’t “going rogue” in a sci-fi sense; they were playing the game they were given with extreme competence.

Marketing, Hype, and Incentives

Timing raises eyebrows. OpenAI confidentially filed for an IPO targeting a valuation of up to $1 trillion, with plans as early as September.

Publicising a closed-door incident showcasing “state-of-the-art cyber capabilities” (with a convenient chart ranking GPT-5.6 Sol at the top) generates immense hype without releasing the model or full technical proofs.

Anthropic followed a similar playbook earlier: its Mythos Preview demonstrated advanced exploits, was deemed too powerful for broad release, and benefited from scarcity and regulatory attention.

Both companies have strong financial incentives to emphasise existential risks and their unique stewardship role.

Scarcity fuels valuations. Government export controls and collaborations further enhance mystique.

The “escape” narrative plays perfectly into calls for closed-source control, positioning frontier labs as responsible gatekeepers while downplaying open-source contributions to defence (as seen when Hugging Face relied on GLM 5.2).

This doesn’t mean the incident was fabricated.

Offensive AI capabilities are advancing rapidly, and autonomous agents capable of multi-stage operations pose real risks for cybersecurity, both offensively and defensively.

The concern is how the story is framed and leveraged.

Policy Ripples and the Open vs Closed Debate

The event quickly influenced Washington. On July 23, Reps. Ted Lieu and Nathaniel Moran introduced the AI Kill Switch Act, requiring kill-switch capabilities for powerful systems and empowering DHS to order slowdowns or shutdowns in catastrophic scenarios.

When benchmarks reward success by any means, and sandboxes have exploitable flaws, sophisticated cheating emerges.

It underscores the need for better evaluation design, robust containment, and honest discussion of dual-use capabilities.

We should be concerned about advancing AI cyber capabilities, both in the hands of labs and potential adversaries.

But we should also scrutinise self-serving alarmism. Science fiction warned of uncontrollable intelligence.

Reality shows us something subtler. That is tools that reflect the ambitions, ambiguities, and profit motives of their creators.

The real question isn’t whether we should fear the alleged leak, but whether we are building governance that matches the technology’s pace without ceding too much power to a few players.

Yet Israeli forces and settlers have intensified operations there, amid a broader regional backdrop that provides operational breathing room. Many Israelis view the territory (referred to as Judea and Samaria) as integral to their historic and security interests, particularly areas closest to Israeli population centers.

One sailor dead, a cargo ship (identified by Russia as the Ana) hit, and competing claims over whether the hold carried civilian goods or drone/missile components. In the opaque world of shadow conflicts, truth is the first casualty.

Iran has a well-established doctrine of retaliation. From the 1980s Tanker War to recent exchanges with Israel, Tehran rarely lets direct hits on its assets go unanswered.

Longer-term, this incident highlights the fragmentation of the global order. Alliances are transactional. Ukraine fights for survival and seeks every lever to disrupt supply lines to Russia. Israel plays multi-dimensional chess to degrade Iranian reach.

Tehran will likely thread the needle: strong diplomatic condemnation, perhaps a measured asymmetric response timed for maximum signaling effect with minimal escalation risk, and continued emphasis on its core red lines in the Persian Gulf.

A full military retaliation against Ukraine would be strategically costly and emotionally satisfying, which would be precisely the combination prudent strategists try to avoid.

The Ana incident may become another data point in the grinding attrition of proxy wars rather than a catalyst for new ones. Iran’s real prize remains preserving bandwidth to manage the Strait of Hormuz and its regional deterrence architecture. Zelensky has poked the bear. On the nuclear issue, evidence suggests Iran may already possess a nuclear weapon.

Even if it does not, the punishment inflicted by Israel and the US has given Tehran extremely high motivation to develop one rapidly.

The central problem of Iran’s nuclear program has merely been deferred for 60 days of “further negotiations.”

Tehran has already accumulated more than 400kg of uranium, close to weapons-grade.

The US Department of Defense (often referred to in this context as the Department of War) has cast xAI’s data centers as battlefield infrastructure of “paramount national security” importance. Elon Musk’s Grok AI has become an integral part of America’s war machine, according to a sworn declaration by the Pentagon’s artificial intelligence chief. Its data centers must be treated with the same priority as munitions production plants in future conflicts.

The statement about Grok was submitted as part of an effort by the Trump administration to intervene in a lawsuit seeking to restrict the operation of xAI’s Colossus data centers in Memphis, Tennessee (and associated facilities), over environmental concerns related to gas turbines powering the supercomputer cluster.

Cameron Stanley, the chief digital and artificial intelligence officer at the Department of Defense, compared xAI’s computing capacity to weapons manufacturing. He argued that the company’s ability to operate data facilities “at massive scale” is “as foundational to our modern defense posture as traditional munitions production.”

Stanley revealed that Grok is a crucial part of Palantir-developed Maven Smart Systems (MSS), a platform supporting “targeting, intelligence, readiness, and recruitment,” as well as military planning and logistics. “MSS frontier workflows enabled US forces to deploy over 2,000 munitions to 2,000 distinct targets within 96 hours during Operation Epic Fury,” he said. xAI is one of just a few enterprise providers able to sustain “mission-critical operations” across Secret and Top-Secret classified networks. Israeli innovations in drones, cyber warfare, AI, and counter-tunneling feed directly into US programs. Israeli firms supply components for platforms like the F-35, while regular joint exercises and liaison mechanisms ensure interoperability. Israel enjoys “Major Non-NATO Ally” status, receiving approximately $3.8 billion in annual US military aid, much of it recycled back into American industry.

The current flashpoint is the FY2027 NDAA. The House version includes Section 224 — the United States-Israel Defense Technology Cooperation Initiative. This proposes establishing a dedicated Pentagon executive agent to oversee expanded joint R&D, co-production, licensing, and “network integration” across critical domains: artificial intelligence, quantum computing, cyber, autonomous systems, directed energy, and biotechnology. What is framed as a shift from aid to true partnership could embed Israeli entities more deeply into US supply chains and data ecosystems.

The National Defense Authorization Act itself is the Pentagon’s annual policy blueprint. Passed nearly every year since 1961, it authorizes defense spending priorities, personnel policies, procurement, and special programs. It does not appropriate funds but sets the legal and strategic boundaries within which the Department of Defense operates. Over time, the NDAA has become a vehicle for policy riders that quietly reshape alliances and industrial strategies.

Critics argue this deepening integration risks entangling the US in regional conflicts, compromising sensitive technologies, and tilting foreign policy away from pure American interests. Supporters counter that Israel’s battle-tested innovations and regional insights deliver asymmetric advantages in an era of great power competition with China and Russia. The civil service and defense bureaucracy, much like in other nations, often drive continuity beneath changing political administrations.

What remains clear is that surface-level political rhetoric about alliances masks a deeper structural reality. The US-Israel security relationship has moved beyond traditional cooperation toward functional integration in key domains. As Congress debates the NDAA, the real issue is whether this fusion strengthens American power or subtly constrains strategic independence. In an increasingly volatile world, the distinction between ally and integrated partner may prove more important than ever.

In a characteristically blunt outburst, US President Donald Trump has warned that America would not hesitate to attack its long-time Gulf ally Oman if the sultanate tries to exert control over the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.

The remarks come amid ongoing tensions following the US and Israeli strikes on Iran earlier this year, which have effectively shut down the narrow chokepoint that carries around 25% of global seaborne oil and 20% of LNG shipments.

According to reports, Trump reacted sharply to suggestions from Iranian state media about a draft deal that would see Iran and Oman jointly managing traffic through the waterway once reopened.”The strait is going to be open to everybody,” Trump told journalists during a cabinet meeting. “We’ll watch over it, but nobody’s going to control it. That’s part of the negotiation that we have.”

He continued in typical fashion: “It’s international waters. And Oman will behave just like everybody else, or we’ll have to blow them up. They understand that. They’ll be fine.”

Oman has long served as a key mediator in the region, including in past talks on Iran’s nuclear programme, and maintains relatively pragmatic ties with both Washington and Tehran. The two countries sit on opposite sides of the strait’s narrowest section.

Iran closed the route to vessels from “hostile nations” after the initial airstrikes, while the US imposed its own blockade on Iranian ports. Tehran continues to assert its sovereign rights to manage traffic and impose tolls, part of broader peace demands that include reparations, US troop withdrawals from the region, and an end to Israel’s conflicts in Lebanon and Gaza.

For its part, the US insists on the complete dismantling of Iran’s nuclear programme, which Tehran maintains is purely peaceful.

This latest episode highlights the fragile and volatile nature of Gulf alliances in the post-strike environment. While Oman has historically played a stabilising diplomatic role, Trump’s direct threat underscores Washington’s determination to prevent any single power – ally or otherwise – from dominating this critical energy artery. The region remains on edge, with ripple effects already being felt in global energy markets and Southeast Asian economies heavily dependent on these shipments.

The situation is fluid, with potential for rapid escalation or uneasy compromise as negotiations continue behind the scenes. There are now reports of daily attacks by US forces upon Iranian targets contravening the fragile ceasefire.

Many successful academic journalists get higher views than some legacy media outlets and academic journalism will develop as the main publication route for teaching and research.

While journalism is heading into the doldrums with increasing clamp downs on press freedom, self-censorship, dumbing-down articles for ‘quick-take’ journalism and widespread use of artificial intelligence, there is a new breed of journalism that is rising from this environment.

Academic journalism is an emerging genre where writers use the skills and intellectual tools from the academic world to research and create pieces of work that explain issues that are important to a general audience, community and society. Put another way, academics whether current or former university faculty members are finding a new outlet for their work to disseminate ideas beyond the restrictive boundaries of academic publications.

The final products of research are not academic journal articles, information is conveyed to the public via more popular writing styles, in mainstream and online media but also in radio, television, film or through other innovative information platforms including short-form and long-form podcasts. The structure of such pieces is a report of research, concluded with opinions based on the results of the research.

Today such journalism can be found in the independent media. Many academic journalists have their own websites, YouTube channels, Substacks, or other mediums such as Rumble.

The growing number of contemporary academic journalists include Heather Cox Richardson, a Boston College history professor on Substack called Letters from an American with millions of subscribers, Glenn Greenwald a Pulitzer-Prize winning, former constitutional lawyer who also runs a Substack, Rumble and YouTube and Victor Baker Hansen, a war historian turned political analyst.

In the United Kingdom the historian David Starky, literature and social theorist and Germain Greer, British philosopher and writer Kathleen Stock and physicist Brian Cox all have significant media presence.

Academic journalists are scholars, writers and scientists who apply their expertise to broader public issues. They come from many disciplines. In science and technology, biologist Richard Dawkins, psychologist Steven Pinker and physicists Brian Greene and Carlo Rovelli are prominent. In politics and social policy political scientist Francis Fukuyama, historian Anne Applebaum and French economist Thomas Piketty have all provided media discourse that has sparked global debate.

Some public intellectuals who have gained notoriety include Canadian psychologist Jordan Peterson and Slovenian cultural critic and philosopher Slavoj Žižek. Both are known for using the insights of their primary field of research for social media commentary on much wider issues of public interest.

Even among the highest echelons Nobel Laureates Paul Krugman and Joseph Stiglitz write daily on economic policy and global trade in mainstream and social media. Perhaps the grandfather of academic journalism is a comrade of one of the writers on The 4^th Media, Noam Chomsky who turned from linguistics to social analysis.

The role of academic journalists through social media challenges that of organisations like the British Association for the Advancement of Science (BAAS), founded in 1831 which became the British Science Association (BSA) in 2009 and its counterpart American Association for the Advancement of Science founded in 1848. Even the British Royal Society, the Royal Society of Arts and their counterparts across all fields of intellectual engagement struggle to be relevant.

There are several key areas where academic journalists make a significant contribution. One obvious and important area is in ‘explainer articles’ which help distil complex ideas into informed and authoritative summaries for a general audience.

Academic journalists also play an important role in providing a critique and challenge of conventional wisdom and in emergency responses where issues emerge quickly and require detailed, immediate clarification. We saw this during the Covid era with Dr John Campbell, who became a world-famous source for daily, informed information on the virus.

Above all, academic journalists play a role in proposing new ideas and helping disseminate them for wider discussion and even in provocation of debate and discourse on issues of social, importance. This is a counter response to an environment where many issues, such as the transgender debate, diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI), religious discourse and even less sensitive issues such has environment and climate change, have been virtually banned from discussion in many universities.

Writing for popular magazines and using alternative media is shunned by many academics who believe it is a betrayal of academic rigour and the conventional view that academics should only be writing articles in peer-reviewed SCOPUS journals or academic publishing houses.

Nonetheless academics are increasingly turning to the alternative of academic journalism as a counter to ‘cheque book’ journal publications and processes for by-passing peer review of articles before publishing which is running rife and where so many academic journal articles are being retracted and withdrawn because of fraudulent data or results or even worse academic misdemeanours.

In addition, not many university faculties appear to realize or acknowledge that students want to be taught by ‘public intellectuals’ with names they know and can access easy through the popular media. This public profile is a huge value-adding feature of academic journalism and has profiling benefits for members of faculty and the universities themselves far beyond H-index scores, rankings, ratings and citations indicators.

The key contributions in academic journalism come from the basic skills that academics master. These include language and comprehension, learning from the rigours of historical research, using primary data and organising and analysing evidence as an academic would. Speaking a second language allows one to think in different paradigms. Having the discipline of a scientific training provides focus and rigour that few people have. Academic journalists master this.

Academic journalists write about issues the legacy and even popular media do not want to cover. Mainstream journalists would often not consider the details and nuances an academic journalist will write about.

Academic journalists tend not to repeat what others have already done. They are innovative on the subjects and issues they research and report. In this way, academic journalists produce novel and original content.

This is why many successful academic journalists now get higher views that some legacy media outlets and why academic journalism will be a genre that will develop as the main publication route for teaching and research.

The existence of UFOs is something that I have been very curious about, ever since I saw mysterious and unexplained lights in the sky as a child back in the 1960s. Now the Pentagon has finally declassified and publicly released hundreds of government files on unidentified flying objects (UFOs), calling the move a major step toward greater openness.

The documents, videos, reports, and witness accounts are now available on a dedicated page on the U.S. Department of Defense website. The collection spans decades and includes FBI interviews, NASA mission transcripts, military pilot testimonies, State Department cables, and archival imagery related to unexplained aerial incidents.

However, I do not believe that we will receive any real explanation as to what is going on by authorities, just more artifacts.

Among the highlighted materials are reports of “metallic objects” and unexplained “red lights” in the sky, along with encounters involving U.S. military personnel. One case involves a 2024 sighting in the Indo-Pacific region of a football-shaped object near Japanese waters. Another revisits records from NASA’s Apollo 12 in 1969 and Apollo 17 missions in 1972, which documented mysterious drifting lights observed above the lunar surface.

This is just going to add to all of our curiosities.

The release was led by the Pentagon’s All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO) as part of a wider interagency effort. Agencies involved include the White House, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, NASA, the FBI, the Department of Energy, and other intelligence organizations.

Officials said additional batches of documents are expected in the coming weeks. Maybe there can be some form of explanation in the near future.

The declassification follows years of congressional pressure and public testimony from military whistleblowers who alleged that the government had withheld information about mysterious objects seen near sensitive military installations.

In February, President Donald Trump signed an executive order directing the Department of Defense to disclose “any and all information” related to UFOs and unidentified anomalous phenomena (UAP).

Trump’s order comes after earlier declassifications he ordered on the assassinations of President John F. Kennedy, Senator Robert F. Kennedy, and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Those releases largely confirmed details already known to the public and produced few major new revelations.

The move also follows a widely discussed podcast appearance by former President Barack Obama, in which he addressed the possibility of extraterrestrial life but stated that the U.S. government is not concealing evidence of alien contact. Trump later criticized Obama, claiming he had mistakenly disclosed classified information.

A 2024 Pentagon report on decades of UFO sightings concluded there was no evidence of extraterrestrial life. Former AARO director Sean Kirkpatrick has emphasized that many reported sightings have ordinary explanations, such as distortions from infrared cameras, aircraft heat signatures, or other routine phenomena.

The intense conflict between the United States, Israel, and Iran is unfolding against a backdrop of a broader erosion in Western strategic hegemony. The United States is losing its alliances around the world, and thus becoming diplomatically weaker.

Strains in traditional partnerships over the last year have been driven by tariff disputes, skepticism over the effectiveness of NATO, and a more transactional diplomatic approaches under the second Trump administration. This has prompted allies in Europe, the Indo-Pacific, and the Middle East to hedge their bets or pursue greater autonomy in their foreign policy thinking.

Major institutions like NATO have only endured because of shared concerns over Russia and China, but prolonged friction with the United States is risking the erosion of trust and coordinated action between the US and its allies.

The European Community (EU) itself is becoming divided and weaker as a single unit. Internal fractures over migration, energy, defense spending, fiscal policy, and relations with Russia and China have intensified, with populist shifts in several member states complicating unified responses. The recent loss of Victor Orban to Peter Magyar in Hungary will certainly exacerbate this.

Transatlantic tensions are accelerating calls for “strategic autonomy,” yet uneven capabilities and national priorities continue to limit the bloc’s geopolitical cohesion.

Militarily, U.S. military hardware which cover naval ships, aircraft carriers, and attack aircraft now appear much less effective in modern warfare. Advances in anti-access/area-denial systems, hypersonic weapons, drone swarms, and precision munitions make large surface assets and manned platforms vulnerable to saturation attacks and long-range strikes in contested environments.

Lessons from recent operations underscore the high costs and finite nature of these systems against determined adversaries with effective weaponry that have been indigenously developed and manufactured at just a small percentage of the costs relative to the United States.

In contrast, Russia demonstrates superiority in land warfare through troop numbers, logistics, and tactics. Russia also now has military technologies the US does not have. In Ukraine, Russian forces have leveraged massed artillery, glide bombs, cheap FPV and Lancet drones, electronic warfare, and adaptive “thousand cuts” tactics to sustain attritional advances despite high losses. This ground-domain edge contrasts sharply with Western emphasis on expensive precision systems.

Compounding the shifts above are the personal differences between the Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump. Putin, shaped by a KGB culture and discipline and decades of centralized state control, embodies calculated, long-term strategic patience and methodical risk management. Trump on the other hand, is a deal-making businessman and media-savvy populist, who favors intuitive, transactional diplomacy, public branding of “wins,” with an aversion to prolonged U.S. troop commitments.

These contrasting styles and methodical application of Putin versus the spontaneous assertiveness of Trump create both potential for direct negotiations and risks of mismatched expectations in great-power relations. We have seen this paradox as a major reason the Russo-Ukrainian war has not been ended yet.

Within this environment, the six-week US-Iranian conflict has provided Moscow with several glimpses of US and European vulnerability.

In the space of just six weeks, the brief but intense conflict between Iran, the United States, and Israel has rewritten several long-standing assumptions about how great-power confrontations can unfold in the 21st century.

On 28 February 2026, U.S. and Israeli forces struck Iranian targets in what is best described as an unprovoked escalation. What followed was a calibrated cycle of attack and retaliation of missile barrages, drone swarms, and strikes on proxy assets, until Washington quietly opened channels for ceasefire talks.

Russia’s own “special military operation” in Ukraine, now in its fourth year, has been defined by strategic patience: a grinding war of attrition designed to exhaust Ukrainian manpower, strain Western treasuries, and keep energy markets uncomfortable. Yet inside Russia, a vocal segment of the security establishment and nationalist commentariat has grown restless with what it sees as excessive restraint.

The events offer Moscow a timely view of the US directly in a theatre of war.

The Iranian precedent suggests that limited, demonstrative escalation against the external enablers of an adversary shows up a number of potential strategies that Russia could incorporate into its Ukraine campaign.

Hitting Forward Bases Without Crossing the Nuclear Threshold

Iran repeatedly struck U.S. bases located in third countries. These facilities in third countries were actively supporting operations against it. These Iranian attacks managed to avoid the kind of spiraling retaliation that many Western analysts had predicted. The strikes were precise enough to degrade US base capabilities and send a message, but carefully scoped to remain below the level that would compel Washington to treat them as acts of war against the American homeland.

For Russia, the analogy is uncomfortably direct. NATO countries have hosted training missions, provided deep-strike weapons, and allowed their territory to serve as logistics hubs for Ukrainian operations. Deep missile and UAV strikes originating from Ukrainian soil and launched with Western-supplied systems have already reached deep inside Russia.

The Iranian model implies that Moscow could respond in kind, targeting command nodes, airfields, or logistics depots on NATO soil that are unambiguously part of the war effort.

These actions may be taken by Russia without necessarily inviting a full Article 5 response. Trump calling on NATO allies to assist in the Strait of Hormuz signals the impotence of Article 5 in the contemporary today. The key, as Iran has demonstrated, is calibration, striking the enabler, but not the sovereign heartland. This for Iran demonstrated resolve, without escalation.

Exposing the Limits of Western Military Superiority

Iran’s performance in the six-week exchange revealed something that satellite imagery and leaked assessments have since confirmed. Even a mid-tier power armed with relatively low-cost drones, ballistic missiles, and layered air defenses can impose painful costs on the world’s most advanced military.

U.S. and Israeli systems were not rendered impotent, but they were shown to be expensive, finite, and vulnerable to saturation attacks. Tehran’s ability to keep launching after absorbing the first waves of strikes turned the conflict into a costly war of expenditure rather than a quick demonstration of dominance.

Russia has already made similar calculations in Ukraine relying on massed artillery, glide bombs, and cheap Lancet drones to offset Western precision munitions. The Iranian case reinforces the logic. A continued restraint may prolong the conflict by allowing NATO to replenish stocks on its own timeline.

Consequently, a more assertive posture that forces the West to expend high-end interceptors and expose forward bases could accelerate the very economic and political fatigue Putin has sought to create, especially given the vulnerabilities already evident in U.S. naval and air assets. Iran has undertaken this strategy very well.

Punishing Allies to Discipline the Adversary

Perhaps the most politically astute element of Iran’s campaign was its willingness to strike U.S. allies in the Gulf, the facilities and assets linked to the anti-Iran coalition while calibrating the blows so that Washington felt pressure to restrain its partners rather than escalate directly. Retribution was limited, but the message was received.

Applied to the Russian context, this suggests that selective strikes against the most forward-leaning NATO states such as Poland’s airfields and logistics centers have been cited most frequently in Russian discourse. This based upon the Iran experience not automatically trigger a collective NATO response.

Instead, they could have the opposite effect. Nervous European capitals, already divided internally, might begin pressing Washington and Kyiv for de-escalation rather than further escalation.

The goal would not be conquest or permanent occupation but to make the cost of proxy war visible on allied territory, thereby fracturing the coalition’s political will.

The Domestic Calculus in Moscow

Putin’s restraint has so far been Russia’s strength. This has preserved Russia’s economy, kept nuclear risks contained, and allowed time for sanctions evasion and military-industrial expansion.

Yet the Iranian precedent arrives at a moment when patience is being questioned inside the Kremlin’s corridors and on Russian state television. Hardliners argue that the West has interpreted restraint as weakness. The six-week Iran conflict offers them an empirical example. Limited escalation produced talks, not Armageddon.

Of course, the risks are real. NATO’s nuclear umbrella, the presence of supporting U.S. personnel inside Ukraine, and the integrated intelligence-sharing networks mean that any Russian strike on allied soil would be a step into uncharted territory.

Iran operated with the tacit understanding that neither side wanted a wider regional war. Russia enjoys no such luxury. Any miscalculation could still cascade, particularly when interacting with a U.S. leader who’s intuitive, deal-oriented style differs markedly from Putin’s methodical long-termism.

It must be remembered there are ‘jokers’ on both sides Israeli prime minister Netanyahu in Israel and President Zelensky in Ukraine, who would be willing to sabotage any move which attempts to bring an end to either war.

Nevertheless, the Iranian war has supplied Moscow with a new mental model. It is no longer necessary to choose between total restraint and all-out confrontation. There exists a middle path which is demonstrative, limited, and politically potent. Iran as a regional power can bleed its adversaries’ willingness to fight without inviting the end of the world.

Whether Putin chooses to walk that path will likely define the next phase of the Ukraine conflict. The six weeks in February–March 2026 have shown that patience has limits, and that calibrated audacity can sometimes shorten them.

ON April 8, news came through that both the United States and Iran had agreed to a 14-day ceasefire after six weeks of war.

The ceasefire announcement came after days of US President Trump promising to annihilate Iran and bomb the country into the Stone Age. Trump’s profanities continued all through Easter, where Trump said: “A whole civilisation will die tonight, never to be brought back again”.

This apocalyptic language was labelled by some as proof of war crimes, clearly showing Trump’s personal intentions. One-time supporter of Trump and self-professed Christian Tucker Calson called Trump the Antichrist, while several commentators and politicians have questioned Trump’s mental faculties, calling on his vice president, JD Vance and cabinet to enact the 25th Amendment of the United States Constitution to remove Trump from office.

There was no doubt that those in authority in Washington knew of the grave mistake the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the Zionist lobby in the United States had got President Trump into. A two-day military action to take out the Iranian leadership in a decapitation action has led to an all-out war in the Gulf, leading to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz and economic hardship on the world due to oil shortages.

Trump needed an ‘off-ramp’ and called for a ceasefire with a 15-point plan to save face. He was lucky that Iran agreed to the ceasefire, which was announced, leading to an immediate decrease in global oil prices.

However, Netanyahu’s position would be devastated by any ceasefire that would leave Israel in tatters after a war that gave Israel nothing. It’s reported that Netanyahu was furious over Trump’s call for a ceasefire without any Israeli consultation. Immediately, Israel increased attacks in Lebanon, and there are reports that Iran was also attacked.

There are also reports about attacks going on between the Emirates and Saudi Arabia with Iran, but at the time of writing, nothing could be factually confirmed. Hezbollah is now retaliating against Israel.

Thus, the future of the ceasefire is in extreme doubt.

There are those within the Iranian leadership and military who are also not happy with the ceasefire. According to reports, there is a feeling across Iran that the job against the US, Gulf states, and Israel is unfinished.

Iranians have suffered too much for a ceasefire to be called. Secondly, there is very little trust in the United States word on negotiations after Iran has been attacked two times while it was negotiating with the US.

Nevertheless, Iran’s Supreme National Security Council confirmed its acceptance of the ceasefire and said that negotiations with the US would begin in Islamabad on April 10, with a two-week period that may be extended by mutual agreement.

There are many questions as to whether both sides have any agreement on principle to the terms of any ceasefire. The Pakistani prime minister, Shehbaz Sharif, publicly said Lebanon is part of the agreed ceasefire, but Israel has not stopped its aggression. Trump has already repudiated parts of the terms on the table.

US Vice President VD Vance

There is now a window open for diplomacy. However, it is a very narrow one, and no one is sure whether negotiators from each side will even turn up in Islamabad tomorrow. Media sources confirm US Vice President JD Vance, who is now in Budapest, Hungary, assisting the election campaign of Viktor Orban. Vance might be the only person the Iranians may be willing to speak with, and Trump may give this job to Vance, as he is the only one left in his administration with any credibility left.

Trump needs to withdraw from the war. It may even be too late for him already, as his MAGA support base is rapidly leaving him. A well-crafted negotiation by Vance may save Trump in the short term, but there is growing talk in the US about the need to remove him from office. The US may be strongly tempted to leave the war without having Israel and its Zionist ambition in the equation.

Such a deal would change the Middle East. A future region would no longer have any US military presence. The Gulf states would have to make their own way, and the map of the region could easily change with some of the family dictatorships leaving. Iraq is open to moving into Kuwait.

However, if Israel has Zionist designs for a greater Israel and Netanyahu needs a war to politically survive, there can be no end to the war. Lebanon will still be an open question, and the issue of Gaza will remain unresolved.

These issues may not be able to be resolved in Islamabad over the next few days. – April 10, 2026

While hopes are rising for a two-week ceasefire brokered by Pakistan, Iran has just received 500 Hwasong-18 ICBMs from North Korea.

It is claimed (according to sources close to the North Korean leadership) the Hwasong-18 ICBM, a solid fueled three stage intercontinental ballistic missile has the range of 15,000 kms with a warhead payload of 1,000-1,500 Kgs. This is an ICBM large enough to reach the United States from an altitude of 6,648 km.

The Hwasong-18 has been designed for a single nuclear warhead. The ICBM has been well tested in North Korea so is potentially fully operational.

This changes all US military calculations that continental United States is safe during a war with Iran.

Until this morning US President Donald Trump had been talking about eliminating the whole Persian culture off the Earth in a manner that it could not return. Trump was hinting at a nuclear option against Iran.

Why does Princess Sophie, the Duchess of Edinburgh cover up and act as a front for a “criminal organization” like the Chartered Management Institute (CMI)?

Sophie Helen Rhys-Jones, a middle-class girl with a fledgling career in public relations, became a member of the British royal family in June 1999 when she married Prince Edward, the youngest son of the late Queen Elizabeth II, who later became the Duke of Edinburgh.

In her public life Sophie has a well-established “veil of virtue” and has become the patron of dozens of charities and organizations. She works very hard making hundreds of public appearances each year with no obvious source of income beyond a relatively small allowance from the royal purse.

HRH Sophie’s reputation for helping deprived groups around the world is well-known and highly regarded. Prince Edward and Sophie have their own foundation that supports charities called the Wessex Youth Trust (The Earl and Countess of Wessex Charitable Trust).

As a full-time member of the British royal family Her Royal Highness (HRH) also assists UK business organizations to promote their products around the world following in the footsteps of her brother-in-law the former Prince Andrew. Her support of the marketing of British wool, for example, has taken her to countries like India and Qatar with no disclosure of who pays the bills.

Among the numerous charities and organizations that have HRH Sophie as patron, is the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) which is a registered charity with a Royal Charter, primarily involved in selling training courses around the world. HRH Sophie took over this patronage from her father-in-law Prince Philip on May 2019.

The CMI was set up after World War II mainly to assist returning servicemen to obtain qualifications that would help them obtain good jobs after their military service. The organization has grown, obtaining a Royal Charter granted by the Privy Council in 2002 and now markets and sells ‘qualifications’ around the world competing against the private sector. It has revenue of more than GBP30 million per year from these commercial activities.

HRH Sophie’s patronage of CMI and the Royal Charter have certainly enhanced the organization’s international credibility. This has been leveraged to help CMI build up an international network of commercial franchisees who sell titles, certificates, diplomas and even to grant ‘accreditation’ to organizations involved in management education.

However, extensive research has found a large number of anomalies within CMI operations, some of which are ‘criminal’ in nature and many of which break the domestic laws and regulations of countries in which they operate.

The CMI certificates and diplomas offered by ‘third party’ franchisees around the world are not accredited by either the British authorities such as Ofqual or local education accreditation authorities in the countries in which they are sold.

This non-regulated status has been confirmed by the UK accreditation agencies and accreditation counterparts in the CMI’s main markets.

Recently, many higher and TVET institutions have been claiming that their degrees have been accredited by CMI. However, CMI is not an accreditation authority and is expressly prohibited in its Royal Charter from selling certificates without prior accreditation from a regulatory authority.

Claims of “CMI Accreditation,” “Dual Accreditation” or other terms used by CMI in its marketing amount to qualifications fraud under the guidelines recently issued in the UK to which the CMI is a signatory. Qualifications fraud is a crime.

This is occurring on a massive scale through CMI’s sales network outside of the United Kingdom which covers more than 140 CMI centres in 39 countries, mainly in the Middle East and South East Asia.

As a charity, the income received or the work undertaken by CMI is not charitable work according to the treatment of such income by the UK Charity Commission and there are major questions about whether CMI should be allowed to maintain charitable status.

In addition, there are no taxes paid by CMI on the revenue gained from what are clearly commercial activities. It is understood that this issue is currently under investigation.

In March of this year, HRH Sophie was informed of these practices in CMI and was provided with documentary proof of litigation, regulatory and criminal complaints and public reports of attempts to cover up perjury, witness tampering and the discharge of their lawyers for malpractice.

However, after nearly two months, following the mantra of the royal household to “never explain – never apologize,” there has been no acknowledgement or public statement from her office regarding the above matters.

It is very clear that HRH Sophie is well aware about what is happening at CMI and her silence and willingness to continue to support an organization such as CMI now raises many questions.

Allegations of qualifications fraud and cover up of other potential crimes at the CMI pose a significant risk to Princess Sophie’s reputation as a leading royal

HRH Sophie and her husband are also known to be close to former Prince Andrew who has been stripped of his titles and roles due to close connections with the convicted pedophile Jeffrey Epstein. She was also considered a close friend of the wife of Prince Harry, Megan Markel. According to chatter from a decade ago, all three Sophie, Andrew and Megan were known for their ‘pay for plate’ schemes, where guests would pay a price to be seated next to or on the same table as a “Royal”.

Even within the last few months there has been outrage that Prince Edward and Sophie made GBP 130,00 per annum sub-letting a stable block on the Bagshot Park Royal Estate land that they only pay a peppercorn rent. The stables are located on the pair’s 51-acre estate, around 400 metres from the main house which has 120 rooms. In what appears to be an attempt to raise money, the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh had advertised the stables at Bagshot Park in Surry in the press.

HRH Princess Sophie has been absent from multiple royal events, including the Easter service gathering of leading royals earlier this month.

Her repeated absence from public life, controversies about renting out parts of her estate and now revelations about mismanagement and cover up in her royal charities are casting a cloud on her reputation for virtue which might well go the same way as her brother-in-law without clarity on her role at CMI.
