Alleged covert Thai forces taking out Malaysian gangs on Malaysian soil
Destroying a politically connected crime network
In Bangkok there appears to be some form of power struggle among Thailand’s top politicians. Prime minister Prayut Chan-o-cha and deputy prime minister Prawit Wongsuwan are competing for the top post. The former general Prayut recently left the ruling Palang Pracharath Party to form the United Thai Nation (UTN) Party, and will be its candidate for prime minister in the coming general election. Former general Prawit will be the candidate for Palang Pracharath.
Generals Prawit and Prayut
These two generals were the masterminds behind the 2014 coup d’etat against the ruling civilian government, formally led by Thaksin Shinawatra’s sister Yingluk had a falling out and are going their own ways politically.
Coincidently, the parliament was discussing a new bill to give amnesty for convicted politicians, which would pave the way for Thaksin’s return to Thailand, without having to serve time in prison. However, this is meeting all sorts of barriers.
It looks very probable that the main opposition party linked to Thaksin, will return to power after the coming general election. Although the passing of the amnesty bill will not happen during the life of the current parliament, there is talk of some negotiations going on in the background.
A concerted campaign is underway against certain criminal operators across Thailand, which is bulging across the borders of Cambodia and Myanmar. High ranking police and officials have been exposed as the owners of these criminal operations.
Back on 29th December, there was a large fire at the Grand Diamond City Hotel in Poipet Cambodia, which housed a large casino catering for Thais just across the border from Aranyaprathet. The casino was alleged to have been a major centre for money laundering.
Nineteen people died in the massive fire. Although the fire was officially explained as originating from an electrical fault, witnesses gave descriptions of the fire inconsistent with that explanation. After the fire a network of underground cables was found originating from the casino and running across the border to Aranyaprathet, on the Thai side.
Just recently, large quantities of crystal methamphetamine packed in tea and coffee packets were seized in Satun and Songkhla, along the border with Malaysia. More than 1.1 tonnes have been seized, believed to be shipped in an operation owned by politically connected criminals.
According to an informant, Thai police are entering Malaysia covertly in pursuit of Thai criminal gangs operating on the Malaysian side of the border. It is claimed that up to 200 covert Thai police are hunting down Thai and Malaysian gangs connected to these narcotics. The informant claims some rogue Malaysian police are assisting them.
We may see how this is all connected in the near future.
