Anwar's use of the word 'keling' exposes racial stereotyping
This dark side of Malaysian culture needs to be changed
Prime minister Anwar Ibrahim’s use of the work ‘keling’ to describe one of Malaysia’s ethnic groups at Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) in Tanjung Malim on Thursday (Dec 21), gives us a rare glimpse into the Malay elite’s view of other ethnic groups.
This Freudian slip, or unintentional error revealing subconscious feelings, which can be construed to give some glimpse into what the Malay elite think about ethnic groups they govern. This is very concerning.
What has made the situation worse is the explanation Anwar gave, saying he was quoting from the book Hikayat Hang Tuah. Anwar claims he has no ill intention - this could be true as he is referring to a Malay stereotype of Indians living in Malaysia.
It is common knowledge that other ethnic groups in Malaysia also have their stereotypes of other racial groups.
Anwar has just put the ‘unspoken’ truth out there. Once it is out there, it just cannot be taken back.
Malaysia should be mature enough to face these stereotypes directly, and clear the air through the Madani framework.
There should be a public discussion about racial stereotyping, so Malaysia as a nation can move on from these unconscious forms of racism.
Otherwise, Malaysia will continue to look like the Malay elite have just replaced the British colonialists, as the authority over the nation.
Malaysia has still not intellectually had Merdeka, if racial stereotyping is allowed to continue unchecked.

Anwar forgot to ask this very important question when he proclaimed a ban on Israel goods and services in Malaysia.
How will this government ban adversely affect the country's trade and economy?
What benefits do Malaysia get by the politics of war for small nation like us?
What tangible and concrete profits for the whole country when the Muslim world praise him for such bold move? A few moment of temporary high, to the detrimental suffering of the whole population in business? Is the transient emotional reward of a fleeting moment for himself worth the consequential loss?
Is the office of the prime minister an opportunity to glorify himself or the responsibility to solve the country's long term accumulated crisis in economy, education, bloated government administration,
humongous national debt, corruption just to name a few crisis facing us now?
Anwar is not an expert in economy, neither a specialist in international relationship, or a health crisis management guru, he needs many competent advisers from all fields, who will he chose to help him make the wise decision, a group of his buddies or real experts?

Does Anwar aware of the danger of surrounded by a group of "yes" men to be his advisors? has he learn anything about the disastrous economic truth of Sri Lanka crisis? Is he ignorant of the consequences of cronyism , nepotism, oligarchy and racism?
