The October 19 eviction order of Kampong Sungai Baru residents under Section 425 (1) of the National Land Code has been postponed until October 31.
This is the result of a private developer Ritzy Gloss Sdn Bhd is purchasing the residents’ properties for a private development, under the authority and compulsion of the law.
Ritzy Gloss is purchasing the residents’ properties for RM 400-500 per square foot, where the market value is RM 1,480 per square foot. With the strength of government compulsion behind them, Ritzy Gloss has no incentive to negotiate any better deal for the residents of Kampong Sungai Baru.
Although several families are preparing to move out, there are reportedly 109 families that have refused the offer and are prepared to go to prison for resisting their eviction orders.
The residents are extremely disappointed with the prime minister Anwar Ibrahim, even though his political secretary obtained a reprieve of the eviction from October 19 to October 31. Residents have posted a pink notice on their doors next to the red eviction notices, pleading to Anwar’s intervention. The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) directly overseas Federal Territory matters, and the Land and Mines Department.

The residents of Kampong Sungai Baru are mostly pensioners, who were squatters on the land for generations. In the 1970s the Selangor Development Corporation (PKNS) built terrace houses for the squatters and provided them with the right to residence.
These evictions are not making way for any public facilities. The compulsory evictions and cheating residents of the true value of their land is taking place for the sole benefit of a developer, who is being assisted by government to take advantage.
This is corporate gangsterism at its worst. Assisted by government, which has a responsibility to look after the rights of Malays. The powerless residents are being ‘railroaded’ by the elite. The Madani government is showing its heartlessness.
