Complete Shah Alam sports complex to be demolished next month to make way for commercial development
Shah Alam will have a much smaller stadium
The Shah Alam sports complex in Section 13 will be demolished next month, according to the Selangor Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari. The Shah Alam Stadium with a history spanning more than 30 years will be no more. The 85,000 seat stadium will be replaced with a much small stadium housing 35,000 people.
Not only will the Shah Alam Stadium be demolished, the indoor Malawati Stadium, Stadium Mini (a football training ground), and the Padang Lawn Bowls will also be knocked down.
Malawati Indoor Stadium set to be demolished next month
Twitter (X) indicates many Selangor citizens are not happy about the pending demolition. Some companies that tendered for the refurbishment of the stadium are unhappy, the project, just changed without notice, leaving them unable to recover their pre-tender preparation costs.
The Selangor State government originally issued a public tender to refurbish, the neglected stadium. However, the refurbishment plan became a lavish RM 3.28 billion commercial development plan, awarded without tender. The contractor will be paid through a land swap according to project approval documents. The project was approved by the last state Exco on June 7, before the state election.
According to the documents, the contractor will be given a “land swap” in consideration for work rendered. A report in The Edge indicates MRCB is the contractor.
The contractor has been actively taking legal action against news portals which published the above news.
There are many questions about this project that need to be answered by the Selangor State Government in the interests of transparency.
