Do you feel free to express your true feelings openly?
What My Readers Feel About Malaysia: Part Four
Welcome to the fourth part of “What My Readers Feel About Malaysia.” For those who have sent emails or made comments: This is not a formal survey as you assume. This is just a set of questions to find out what My readers feel about the questions I asked. Its not meant to be extrapolated to the general community, it is just a representation of the cohort of my readers who took the trouble to answer my questions.
Here are some selected comments on today’s question, without my comments.
“The majority race can express themselves openly without being pubished but not the minority races who will be charged under SOSMA, security act, etc. However, among the minority races it is strongly expressed among themselves.”
“No! No! No! I am very sad that we are coming to this stage. If we do not come together and resolve our current problems there is little hope for the future.”
“When I lived in Malaysia, I was always looking over my shoulder before I opened my mouth to say what I actually felt. It was only when I left Malaysia and went to the US for graduate school that I learned to be direct. I feel like we are all locked in a collective trauma from May 13th, 1969. We'll never get over the PTSD if we can't talk about it in a reasonable way. The New Economic Policy institutionalized racism.”
“No, because there will be repercussions.”
“No, too many zealots around. Take for instance the Chinese private school situation, it can be argued that this aggressive Chinese push to preserve their culture scares the other races. There is a clear racial divide here with Chinese who are the ones that tend to look down upon other cultures.”
“You must be joking”
“Not really, too many sensitive politicians looking to show their power.”
“Not really, at times police will appear at your door steps to harass or intimidate or arrest you for highlighting sensitive issues.”
“I would like to express but the government uses all avenues to control all free will to express.”
“To a certain extent... Have to be mindful of the sedition law”
