Former health minister Khairy Jamaluddin has taken exception to an article “What does KJ know?”, published in FMT on 25th June, written by academic Dr Geoffrey Williams.
It is understood that Khairy made a complaint directly to FMT, where the column was published. FMT has offered Khairy the right of reply. Khairy also made a complaint to Dr Williams employer, the chairman of Malaysia University of Science and Technology (MUST) Tan Sri Effendi Norwawi. Effendi is also Chairman of the Malaysian Institute for Economic Research (MIER). Effendi and Khairi recently made a visit to PM Anwar Ibrahim to tout MIER for consultancy to the finance ministry.
Sales meetings at a high level
Dr Williams claimed in the article that Khairy sees a “clear lack of economic direction”, blaming the slide in the Ringgit and rising of the cost of living on prime minister Anwar Ibrahim. In the rest of the article, Dr Williams claims that Khairy had never held an economics portfolio, the unity government inherited the economic problems, there were two recessions and an inflationary boom under the governments KJ was part of, and then explained the positive things the new unity government has done for the economy.
Khairy’s approach to Dr Williams article appears very much arrogant and elitist to think that his very disagreement of the contents of an article, is enough to get the article pulled off the portal. As Khairy is a public figure, he must be open to constructive criticism, and scrutiny.
There is no place for censorship though privilege and intimidation in Malaysia
It would be very opportune for Khairy to open up a public debate. Besides his objections to Dr Williams article, there are some very important issues that he could answer. First, are the issues in the Audit-General’s Report, relating to the Ministry of Health and vaccine procurement, while he was minister. Second, what role did Khairy play in agreeing to the World Health Organization (WHO), take direct authority over the relative health bureaucracy in Malaysia in times of an emergency?

A public debate would be opportune.
Khairy was contacted in the early morning hours through his Twitter account. At the time of writing, has not made any reply.
