Landowners in Kampong Sungai Baru given eviction notices
The developer has become the law enforcer
The land administrator has ordered Kampong Sungai Baru landowners to vacate their homes by October 19 to make way for a new redevelopment project. The had originally been told they have until October 31 to vacate. The notice said landowners are illegally residing on government land, which is an offense under Section 425(1) of the National Land Code, where those found guilty could receive a fine up to RM500,000 or imprisonment for up to five years.
The notice was being handed out by employees of Ritzy Gloss Sdn Bhd, the redevelopers of the area, not by government officials.
A number of houses have already been sealed off by construction tape.
Residents have been complaining the compensation offered for their land was inadequate. Land and Mine Office valuations were only around 30% of private valuations.
