Malaysia faces a serious dengue epidemic this year
Time to widen the MOH focus away from pre-occupation with Covid-19 towards other diseases which pose a clear and present danger to Malaysians
More than 35,202 cases of dengue fever have been reported in Malaysia since January 1, according to the Ministry of Health (MOH). This is a massive increase over the 11,921 cases reported during the same time last year.
In addition, more than 22 people have died from dengue fever related issues, compared to six during the same time last year. There are currently 106 hotspots around the country, focused on the peninsula, the majority being in Selangor.
Its too early to know whether there were any dramatic increases of cases during the Hari Raya holiday period, as dengue fever takes up to 14 days to develop illness.
Cumulative cases from December 29, 2019 to May 1, 2023 in Malaysia were 37,470 cases, where 35,202 cases have occurred this year according to the MOH Official Dengue Community portal.
