A sign of a minister losing grip with reality

Fahmi is acting rogue

My site Murray Hunter has been spasmodically blocked over the last two days. Someone is turning on and off a block, or selectively blocking my Substack through selected internet providers.

Fahmi Fadzil, the minister for communications and digital is circumventing the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 by blocking selected blogs and websites without notice. This is a guerilla tactic to unsettle sites critical of the government.

Word around town was that a number of critical sites, including mine were block (or still are through certain providers) on Friday night.

Symptom of a bigger issue

Being speculative, these actions appear to be coming single-handedly from Fahmi Fadzil himself. There does not appear to be any directive from his boss, prime minister Anwar Ibrahim to do such a thing. In fact, Anwar has on a number of occasions said he and his government should be open to criticisms.

If this is the case, then these actions to block critical websites appear to be an attempt to please his superior. The other possibility is that the power to block websites has been too alluring for him to restrain from undertaking these illegal acts.

This is also a sign of the cloud of insecurity Fahmi Fadzil is living within. Fahmi is well aware his performance has been lacking, and any cabinet reshuffle, may just sweep him away, onto the back bench.

There is even a bigger problem

Fahmi’s actions are also part of a much bigger problem Anwar is facing. Fahmi is part of a recalcitrant cabinet Anwar is putting up with at the moment. Some of it is just incompetence, which we see with Fahmi. However, some within Anwar’s cabinet are directly appear to be directly disobeying Anwar. We cannot tell whether this is because they think they know better than Anwar, or they are actually sabotaging him.

The blocking of websites by Fahmi is a warning to Anwar of the destruction his own cabinet is doing to his government. Anwar must act quickly to prevent a disaster, which will be devastating for his government, and take him out of office.

Anwar’s own minister are killing him by Lingchi or ‘death by a thousand cuts’.
