He was an indolent and capricous seat warmer. Why statesman? He was deliberately chosen to replace Dr. Mahathir by the wily old Machievellian statesman himself. - now there is the manifestation of the definition of a statesman if you ever wanted one-.

Badawi was notorious for his lack of initiative, even at the UN, with a member of the US security council staff once remarking "it would take two sticks of dynamite to get anything out of this dude. One up his butt to wake him up the other a simple reminder for him to keep awake." It was a crude refrence to Badawi's so called "gentle character". A euphemism for his backwardness, his lack of initiative and his failthful oberservance of Dr. Mahathir's instructions for him to keep away from the heat of international relations at the UN. Badawi was out of his depth in internatioal relations and in many other areas that required a depth that was simply not a part of his professional makeup.

Mahathir knew the man lacked character and the intellectual capacity to analyse and on his own bat to tackle problems of an international and complex nature.

Lastly Badawi was known for his lust for women including his sister in law who he had coveted and had an affair with for some time even whilst he was still married to her sister his wife. I don't' like to speak ill of the dead, but one might say, Badawi was already quite dead whilst he was still alive.
