The Rakyat are continually betrayed by their leaders
Malaysians keep being taken for a ride
With financial scandals under the former Perikatan Nasional government continuing to come to light. The question that must be legitimately asked is how many ministers and their families were involved in illegal commissions through the Covid pandemic? These corrupt rorts went across almost all ministries as RM900 billion was released by the then government.
Current minister Tengku Zafrul Aziz, who was finance minister at the time has many questions to answer. He was either incompetent, complicit, or covering up.
The trail is getting closer to exposing another monumental corruption scandal at the pinnacle of government leadership. The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) arrested a CEO for allegedly acting as a middleman in the distribution of contracts and commissions.
More than five individuals are believed to have been involved in assisting companies gain projects worth between RM 50 to 500 million. These contracts were all involved in Covid stimulus packages.
According to Finance Twitter, Adam Radlan Adam Mohammad, a Bersatu divisional leader, is a cousin of former prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin’s son in law, Mohamad Adlan Berhan. Mohamed Adlan is married to Muhyiddin’s daughter Nabilah, who is a shareholder of Agathishwo Jia Sdn Bhd, a company involved in the National Integrated Immigration System (NIIS), developed by Muhyiddin, while he was home minister under the Pakatan Harapan government in 2019.
These connections appear to go back to 2011, when another company 1BesteriNet, which Muhamad Adlan was associated to, gained a 15 year project, worth RM 4.47 billion, introduced by then education minister Muhyiddin Yassin to provide 4G broadband, and Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) to 10,000 schools across the country.
The project replaced what Google Classroom provides for free.
During the Covid pandemic, Muhyiddin as prime minister released more than RM 900 billion as Covid relief and economic priming. Due to the emergency he called, these funds were without any scrutiny or transparency during 2020-2021.
The MACC is alleging that contractors paid a 3-5 Percent commission to the accounts of a political party, in the guise as political donations. All these projects were by direct negotiation, rather than tender. These contracts went across nine ministries and agencies.
This was all hidden until the current prime minister Anwar Ibrahim exposed this corruption at a press conference a few days ago. Soon after the MACC made an arrest, with others expected to follow.
This indicates that a network of political leaders, family members, and contractors through company and political party bank accounts syphoned off public monies through secret commissions for their own benefit.
Malaysia’s position in the 2022 Corruption perceptions Index (CPI) has dropped from 51st place in 2019 to 62 out of 100 in 2022. The Covid pandemic, where many people suffered financially, just appeared to be an opportunity to plunder.
The Rakyat have been taken for a ride by the nation’s leaders. Former prime minister Mahathir Mohamed’s children each own large corporate stakes valued in the billions. Najib Razak had his 1MDB. Now the tip of the iceberg of corruption is being uncovered during Muhyiddin Yassin’s prime ministership.
One can only see that the leaders of the country have little regard for the welfare of the people. Islam is used as a smokescreen, Ketuanan Melayu as a cover, and the Covid pandemic as an excuse to rape and pillage public funds. Â
Former health minister Khairy Jamaluddin, and current director general of the ministry of health Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah must come clear about what they know about the excess 6 million doses of vaccine, that have to be destroyed because of passing their expiry dates.
There has been a cabal of political leaders, their families, middlemen, civil servants, and contractors involved in creating financial opportunities exclusive to their own circle. They have colluded in stealing public funds, at a time when the Rakyat needed enormous financial assistance.
How the MACC acts over the next month will tell us what the future of Malaysia will be like.
