UK Covid-19 inquiry: An insight into public policy and administration
Incompetence, policies and administration which cost rather than saved lives
The UK Covid-19 Inquiry is a great insight into the making of public policy and administration. The United Kingdom is one of the few countries that have held any form of inquiry into public administration during the pandemic. Governments are reluctant to invite public scrutiny into how nations were governed between 2020-2022.
The testimonies show a culture of secrecy, where decisions were based upon whims and what other governments were doing. Political considerations overrode evidence and expert opinion. In most cases, experts were not sort out for advice. The inquiry highlights incompetence, polices, and administration, which cost rather than saved lives.
The hearing shows the dangers of lack of public scrutiny over the exercise of public policy by politicians and bureaucrats. The whole issue of the power of administrative law needs a rethink, as it was found to infringe upon the rights of citizens.
The recording indicates that governments around the world are out of control. Citizens are the victims of their governments, as the pandemic clearly showed.
For those interested in public policy this video will be of great interest as a case study in the poor practice of public policy during a ‘crisis’.
