Unicef Study: 52 percent of children in low-income households in KL public housing eat fewer than 3 meals a day
The recently released Unicef study “Living on the Edge” found that one in two children in low-income families in Kuala Lumpur public housing eat less than 3 meals per day. This is a rise from 45 percent before the Covid-19 pandemic.
The report stated as food prices keep rising, the poor are switching to low nutrition foods such as instant noodles and eggs for proteins.
The recovery of Malaysians from the Covid-19 pandemic hit those in poverty much harder than other sectors of society. This has put meat, chicken, and seafood out of the reach of low-income households as food staples.
According to the study of 755 families living in low-cost public housing, 82 percent were Malay households, 16 percent Indian households, and 2 percent were Chinese households. Of these, 59 percent were single mother and 59 percent of those with disabilities fell below the poverty line. Issues like poor health and depression were associated with these groups.
Even though the Malaysian economy grew 3.7 percent in 2023, unemployment fell to 5.9 percent, and financial relief programs like RAMLAH are in place, Kuala Lumpur’s poor are falling behind the rest of society, that are almost fully recovered.
Many of the households in public housing lived on salaries below RM 2,000 per month, and had to borrow money from friends and family, and/or sell their possessions to survive. Many cannot afford the rising costs of transport and those associated with school, so abandon their children’s education.
The only way many survive is from the generosity of NGOs that provide food and care packages to public housing communities.
This situation is occurring while prime minister Anwar Ibrahim gave a 13 percent pay rise to the most secure employed cohort in Malaysian social, the civil service. Just a couple of months ago Anwar announced that hardcore poverty had been eradicated in Kuala Lumpur.
To those Malays living in poverty, affirmative action towards Malays is just a hallow narrative.

Hey guys, got nuffing to say, eh?
Subject is a downright serious issue and you conveniently dumb, brain-numbed insensitive bastards' got nuffing to pontificate on, eh?
What about you, our loving religious heroes, Christians with their love fest for their neighbours, living Buddhas for sentient beings, Muslims for their jihad against poverty etc?
What's the matter? Heads conveniently buried in sand?
No rush of the good people to, say, come here, urgently discuss "Saving Malaysia"? Then go to the neighbourhoods see to it not one person left behind, all get looked after. You guys too busy tossing off in front of your deities and holy books or what?
No one knows how our holy Mullah Anwar arrived at his wisdom there's no poverty in a few parts of Malaysia. There's serious poverty all over Malaysia if you care to open your eyes. There is plenty seriously wrong with Dear Mullah's head to have come up with his smug and seriously insane Holy pronouncement he's taken care of poverty and he can get back to winning over the Holy spirits of Ketuanan Inc.
Between UNICEF and Dear Mullah, I'd, for the love of Allah, trust UNICEF more than Dear Mullah's usual diarrhoea of disappointing self-serving glib sermons. Besides Anwar is gone tomorrow but poverty will be around for a good long time.
We need to support Palestinians for the sake of humanity, not Dear Mullah's grandstanding on the world stage. If we do boycotts, we will have to honestly hold back on that burger, fried chicken pizza, Coke etc. Palestine is not a proprietary Muslim issue, it's about humanity. You don't have to be a Muslim or Malay to feel for those suffering from genocide, Palestine has lots of Christians if you are partial with your love.
Well, it seems, and per usual, Dear Mullah is wavering in his stance over support for the Palestinians, some lightweights of "curious" Unkasama Sam dropped by to do their spot of bullying and our heroes are, as usual, pissing in their sarongs and ready to lelong off their Palestinian buddies! That's the quality of our heroes' wobbly jelly legs, wtf.
All Dear Mullah needs do is pick up the phone, yell at buddy the Yahudi neocon massah Paul Wolfowitz of "American century that was" fame, tell him to get the US to fcuking lay off the bullying, and that's a good job done, the whole world is watching and waiting and waiting for Dear Mullah to grow a spine. Dear Mullah was not sparing when it was flaunting his closeness to his arch neocon handler, it was said he even found a girlfriend for the ugly mutt. Incidentally, that Muslim girlfriend was said to be one of the reasons Wolfowitz got deposed.
Standing for our rights over whatever our views and policies are is about our national sovereignty. We cannot be bullied over our sovereignty no matter how "curious" the US is about how we see or do or not do things. Our politicians are excessively thick but it doesn't take much to see the world has changed and the Uncle of some of our monkeys no longer have power over the majority of the world. Piddling little nations with balls larger than raisins have stood up and faced off the US. We really don't need Dear Mullah's appeasing, grovelling tone. It doesn't impress the Islamic and Arab world to start with.
Supporting the Palestinian cause while also having to deal with the very visible issue of poverty in Malaysia do not appear matters Dear Mullah is capable of handling. Sadly, Anwar in all his long long years in politics has not produced a record that shows he's actually capable of doing anything more than just talking a big big load of fanciful rot.
Malaisesians will take a damn long time to discover their idol is but just another bullsh*t jungle variety of "G*d's gift to Malaysia". But does it matter to our insensitive brain dead sh*t4brain who'd not wake up for anything than discount feed of junk food, Alhamdullilah and Hallelujah and Halloween!
As a Yahudi may say, you save one person you save the whole world. Yes, wtf, you just go save the Palestinians and our poor. And fcuk Dear Mullah's circus antics all for himself, him, and he.
