Facebook censored factual information about the Covid vaccines
Is this a breach of the US 1st amendment by the Biden Administration?
Substack journalist Michael Shellenberg recently disclosed that a Facebook executive admitted the platform removed ‘vaccine misinformation’ on instructions from the White House former Covid advisor Andy Slavitt.
In an email (reproduced and redacted) to Slavitt, Facebook admitted it removed ‘other true content’. Facebook also removed several groups and accounts promoting what Facebook called ‘sensational content’.
The email also clearly stated that Facebook implemented a number of measures that limited the forwarding of messages.
The White House had been concerned that Facebook was partly responsible for vaccine hesitancy. This was undertaken within an environment where the White House and Congress were regularly threatening to revoke Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, which indemnifies social media platforms from liability over information posted by users. Such a removal of Section 230 would be a dire threat to the operation of any social media operations platforms.
Under the 1st Amendment, the government is forbidden to engage in viewpoint-based censorship. Thus, prima facie the government, or its agents upon the evidence shown in the email has breached the 1st Amendment.
The state attorney general of Missouri is currently suing the Biden administration for violating the 1st Amendment of the Constitution.
