"The use of Cantonese allowed the use of expressions and emotions, other dialects might not have shown so clearly."
Utter tosh, no relation to reality.
Powered by Orientalism.
No "fantasy" here. More like wet dream of some aspiring to a Sundance Festival showdown.
And stardom.
Spare me, acting was overacting, wooden, no Stanislavski this side of Nusantara, treatment, cast, production could do with a good dose of better experience, injection of intelligence and creativity.
Probably good intentions and all, but a good and close study of the work of Satyajit Ray would have done magic to the enterprise.
Ray used his pocket money, worked during weekends, used casts of the hempen homespun from the streets and villages. And he made monumental work.
Sarawak and Sabah had given the middle finger and said fcuk off to Malaya in the film, but before that the project would have been in better hands getting Sarawak's Tsai Ming Liang to take full charge of all aspects of the enterprise. The reworked effort would even win international acclaim (check out the doting UK's Guardian about the dood)
Tsai would not have made the film in Cantospeak guttural, and thank better taste, and the Big Woman up the Sky for that!
The Malaysian political masters is the deep state. Nothing new in the history of mankind whatever the race and culture. As are commented by the following quotations, by Friedrich August von Hayek (8 May 1899 – 23 March 1992)
"It is indeed probable that more harm and misery have been caused by men determined to use coercion to stamp out a moral evil than by men intent on doing evil." ~ Friedrich August von Hayek
"Social justice rests on the hate towards those that enjoy a comfortable position, namely, upon envy." ~ Friedrich August von Hayek
"While an equality of rights under a limited government is possible and an essential condition of individual freedom, a claim for equality of material position can be met only by a government with totalitarian powers." ~ Friedrich August von Hayek
"The chief evil is unlimited government, and nobody is qualified to wield unlimited power." ~ Friedrich August von Hayek
"It seems to be almost a law of human nature that it is easier for people to agree on a negative program - on the hatred of an enemy, on the envy of those better off - than on any positive task." ~ Friedrich August von Hayek
"We shall not grow wiser before we learn that much that we have done was very foolish." ~ Friedrich August von Hayek
"By giving the government unlimited powers, the most arbitrary rule can be made legal; and in this way a democracy may set up the most complete despotism imaginable." ~ Friedrich August von Hayek
"No human mind can comprehend all the knowledge which guides the actions of society." ~ Friedrich August von Hayek
"The argument for liberty is not an argument against organization, which is one of the most powerful tools human reason can employ, but an argument against all exclusive, privileged, monopolistic organization, against the use of coercion to prevent others from doing better." ~ Friedrich August von Hayek
"The more the state "plans" the more difficult planning becomes for the individual." ~ Friedrich August von Hayek
"Freedom can be preserved only if it is treated as a supreme principle which must not be sacrificed for particular advantages." ~ Friedrich August von Hayek
"Through the inevitable mismanagement of resources and goods at the disposal of the state, all forms of collectivism lead eventually to tyranny." ~ Friedrich August von Hayek
"I do not think it is an exaggeration to say history is largely a history of inflation, usually inflations engineered by governments for the gain of governments." ~ Friedrich August von Hayek
"The idea that human kind can shape the world according to wish is what I call the fatal conceit" ~ Friedrich August von Hayek
"Everything which might cause doubt about the wisdom of the government or create discontent will be kept from the people. The basis of unfavorable comparisons with elsewhere, the knowledge of possible alternatives to the course actually taken, information which might suggest failure on the part of the government to live up to its promises or to take advantage of opportunities to improve conditions--all will be suppressed. There is consequently no field where the systematic control of information will not be practiced and uniformity of views not enforced." ~ Friedrich August von Hayek
"Once you admit that the individual is merely a means to serve the ends of the higher entity called society or the nation, most of those features of totalitarianism which horrify us follow of necessity" ~ Friedrich August von Hayek
Sadly, this movie turns what could be a poignant political and cultural subject into cheap melodrama. The cinematography is bland. The characters are flat. Their plight is contrived. The dialogue is banal. The acting is way over-the-top. We don't see characters, we see cartoon cut-outs. The only effective acting belongs to the silent Malay girl. As soon as the others open their mouths, we know who they are.
The film does not explore the events that led to the family's plight. All we know is that there are evil, sadistic troopers who want to rape and pillage. While the segregation of the races is intriguing, it is not explained in any meaningful way. If this is meant to be the future of Malaysia, show us how and why that future happened. Give us more context!
Sadly, I think the movie that I would compare it to is Birth of a Nation. Not a compliment.

Hayek can't stand beyond the knee of Karl Marx to beg to drink the bearded man's piss.
Every other admirer of Hayek has a fascist streak. Some were freaking weird, Karl Popper being a great example. Oh, where's Soros?
Salma Hayek is more interesting.
