Whether we like it or not we have seen real symptoms of some deep rooted problems in the Malaysian society in the race relation context in the past couple of decades - e.g., 2nd & 3rd generation Chinese & Indian Malaysians who could hardly converse in Bahasa Malaysia, 'flocking' of students of the same race in public institutions of higher learning (obviously less so in private ones, maybe because of overwhelming representation from a particular race), even in work places - we have overwhelming majority of Malays in government departments and GLCs, but the opposite in Chinese-run companies.
These symptoms indicate deeper rooted problems that need to be acknowledged, verified and addressed openly and objectively. Sweeping them under the carpet in order to maintain "harmony" will only turn them into even more disastrous time bombs. We need to honestly figure out whether vernacular school system is contributing to this problem or otherwise, irrespective of whether its existence is constitutional or not. For all we know, our Brits colonial master in the past could purposely & brilliantly let this happened as a "lasting" gift to the natives. No need to question academic standing of anyone, afterall we do have academic "garbage" coming out of the Ivy Leagues too....
