Pious platitudes devoid of any true meaning. Human Rights and the definition of the term varies widely from state to state from culture to culture and is so because of the nature and character of secularism.
The idea and definitions of secularism is very Anglo Christian and not universal. If caning is inhumane then so too is jailing, (incarceration), arrest, restraint (physical and temporal), denial and restriction of movement between states and nations and at least a thousand other such deprivations and punishments.
The Mufti's statement reflects a long tradition and practice carried out in Islamic communities and in Christian communities (referred to as corporal punishment- although not ordained by God or prescrbed by the bible). Rejecting the Mufti's statement does not in any way erase the stain of that truth. It is a bit like stating that men and women of all faiths break their marriage vows by engaging in extra marital sex covertly within the institution of holy matrimony. These are inconvenient truths we do not wish to face. But they are the truth nonetheless.
Sabahans and Sarawakians are the runt of a brutal empire that was once privately owned by individual British families called the White Rajahs.
Instead of trying to eradicate the memory and culture of that era of White rule, these utterly culturally damaged people (like the Filipinos) seem to wallow in their cultural confusion and take pride in their identity crisis.
Gandhi once referred to the Indian equivalent of this mindset (the Anglo Indians) thus:
"monuments to European adultery in the east. Possessing the virtues of neither but the vices of both". Sabah and Sarawak are irreversibly Malaysia.
"We call upon the State Government to categorically reject the Mufti’s statement and reaffirm Sabah’s secular framework and constitutional autonomy."

Bravo!
Doesn’t the Federal Constitution override the State’s?
